Pet Health & Safety > Locating Your Lost Pet

Your lost or perhaps stolen pet may never be found, but there are steps that you, as an owner can do to cut down on the risk:

* Always keep pet ID tags with current information on all your pets, and never allow them to roam freely. Tags that provide two numbers- your cell phone, work phone or your vet's number, give extra protection.

* Should your pet disappear, take immediate action. Don't wait for him/her to come home on their own.

* Commit to memory certain characteristics of your pet, (i.e. markings, color, etc.).

* Pets — especially cats — sometimes hide in out-of-the-way spots such as attics, basements, and sheds. Search the immediate area thoroughly before heading out.

* Post the immediate area of your home first with flyers describing your pet. Include a reward, but don't list an amount, in order to avoid those who may not have your pet at all.

* Cats usually stay within a 2-mile radius, but dogs could be within a 20-mile radius.

* Use the classified section of your newspaper. 'Found' ads are usually placed free of charge, while 'lost' ads are relatively inexpensive. It could be well worth it.

* Call your local radio station. Some smaller towns may announce lost-pet information. Also, some newspapers have 'special interest' sections that may draw attention to your lost pet.

* Call or drop by your local Animal Shelter to see if your pet was picked up.

* Finally, call the U.S. Department of Agriculture office in your area to ask inspectors about dealers that sell stray animals for research and leave a description of the pet.

Give your pet a fighting chance if they get lost by ordering one of our unconditionally guaranteed pet tags today.
