Pet Health & Safety > Helping Your Pet Lose Weight

Occasionally, an overweight condition in a pet can indicate an underlying health problem. However, if you and your veterinarian have ruled that out, it could just be a case of overeating combined with little exercise. A good indication of a weight problem in your pet, is if you can't feel their ribs.

The best way to help your pet slim down is, like humans, through EXERCISE. If you and your pet are a little new to that concept, you might want to start with short walks and work up to longer outings. Remember that exercise alone won't take the pounds off.

You might want to switch to a high fiber dog food, which is more filling. Since this may not be as tasty to your pet, try mixing a high fiber, low-fat food with their regular food. Usually a dog requires 30 calories per pound per day. Lower this amount to 20 calories per pound per day. You can also feed them small portions, spreading them throughout the day.
