Heartworms

HeartwormsBoth cats and dogs can fall to victim to mosquito bites that can cause 'heartworm disease'. Heartworm disease (which literally affects the heart) can cause weight loss, coughing, and eventually death if left untreated. The disease is carried from dog to dog by the mosquito. There is no other form of transmission. When the mosquito bites the dog or cat, the immature heartworms are transferred into the pet and start their development within the pet's heart.

Heartworm disease can be detected only by a blood test done by your veterinarian. It's important to have your pet checked twice yearly, if you live in an especially hot climate or an area prone to mosquito habitation.

Heartworm preventive medicine is available from your veterinarian, and should be given to both inside and outside pets. If you live in an area where there's a lot of cold weather, your vet may recommend you give the medicine during the summer months when the mosquitoes are active.

Do not, however, give heartworm medication to a pet that hasn't tested negative for the disease first. To do so could cause serious consequences to your pet.
